I wanted to know if there is a way to password protect the options screen if someone was to attach a monitor & keyboard directly to the FreeNAS server?

Thank you

Ok, so I really am nearly there!

I've gone from only a few weeks ago, having a Freenas box that simply held my movie collection and my music via Plex, needing no interaction from me. Just the idea of opening a shell, adding a user or even talking about permissions terrified me...

To today, where I have a fully automated Home entertainment system, using Plex, Sick rage, Couch Potato, Headphones, Mylar and BTSync. I have a stack of CIFS shares. I take regular snapshots of my jails and weekly...

AD Share Permissions in a Jail

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to deal with AD permissions in a Jail. I have reviewed this page which worked perfectly for my non AD joined system however once joined to AD can I still repeat the same process to enable group write for a folder?

https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...plugins-write-permissions-to-your-data.27273/

I.E. Create a group based on the GID of the AD group and then add the user to that in the jail.

If so does the GID or UID of the...

After upgrade to 201508250051, things stopped working. I booted into 201506292332 and it works again.
OS-X Server is Running 10.9.5.

Any Idea what I can do?

Hi guys,

I have a functioning FreeIPA server that manages all my users and I would like to also use it for my FreeNAS CIFS shares to authenticate against.

Does anyone know what needs to be run on both servers?

Info:
FreeIPA v3.0.0-42 running on CentOS 6.6
FreeNAS 9.2.1.9 (can use 9.3 if easier, was trying to get it working before dealing with certs)

Advantage of windows vs unix permissions?

On one server I have UNIX datasets and I simply added Windows permissions on top of them and everything works like a champ.

For my new server I have Windows datasets with Windows permissions which work great until I have to transfer files via FTP then it breaks because it can't chmod.

I've looked through various threads and I understand why chmod doesn't work and why the perms are separate but I don't understand why I would use windows perms natively if there is no real advantage to it...

my windows security for the folder says everyone full control.

Permissions Issue For Large Files Only (6GB+)

All,

I've got FreeNas 9.3 running, the FreeNas box is set up as domain controller, Active Directory is bound to this domain, and everything seems to be working great, including 105-125MB/sec transfers across a 1Gb network.

But I have one big problem. Whenever I copy a file larger than about 6GB from Windows to the FreeNas share I get this strange behavior. First the file will appear to be copying, speeds ranging between 105-125 MB/sec (1Gb network). Next the status bar goes back to the...

Hi All,
Not sure that's a good thread title but hey ho.

I have 5 users accessing 6 shares via cifs. I have got them into one of four user groups -

admin (me, owner of files and full access)
management (full access but no permission to change owner or permissions)
readworker (read/write, execute but no delete, no permission to change owner or permissions)
deleteworker (read write execute and delete, no permission to change owner or permissions)

Having set the permissions all seems to be...

about 2 months ago I tried make a upgrade from version 9.1 to 9.3, I never managed to make the AD work so I was forced to roll back

here two problems that I have

first problem, the system automatically changes my smb4.conf file to a wrong one, if I manually edit the file, add the same parameters I have been using in another box, restart the...

Can't connect to AD in 9.3 anymore

Hi all,

I had a domaincontroller running on a specific IP inside a VBox-instance on my FreeNas-instance.
I used the "DirectoryService" -> "Active Directory" functionality.
My problem was that everytime I rebooted the Nas I had to reconnect to that DC.
However, my FreeNas was connected to this AD and all was running fine.

A few weeks ago I moved the DC to a seperate machine outside my FreeNas-instance (with new IP).
Up from this point I was not able to connect the AD anymore.

Everytime...

How to change the WebGui password for root?

Sorry if this sounds like a total noob question but I simply can't find the option in the GUI. YES, I know I can do it from the console but I am led to believe there is an option to do it from the GUI.

I assumed that if I change the password via the command line while logged in with SSH that will not sync with the WebGUI?

P.S. Yes I have searched, yet found nothing relevant.

Hi All,

Ended up with some extra hardware and decided to setup another FreeNAS instance. All excited, about 20TB worth of SSD's, about another 100TB of 4TB SAS 10K drives, an HP DL585 with 32 threads and 384GB RAM... and the new and improved FreeNAS 9.3.1! Or that is how it started out anyways...

Fresh install of 9.3.1 FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201509022158.iso.

Configured IP, NTP, DNS, etc. All working. Followed the Active Directory instructions posted here:...

Since updating from FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201504152200 to FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201509282017 our LDAP users no longer have home folders.

Example (note the empty field before the shell):
$ getent passwd
user.one:*:10028:513:System User::/bin/sh
user.two:*:10039:513:System User::/bin/sh

This has broken samba home shares as well as user ssh. I haven't gotten a chance to revert back to FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201504152200, but all of our servers were rebooted during the FreeNAS upgrade and the other...

OSX 10.10.5 + server.app 5.04 + Open Directory + FreeNAS 9.3.1 on a Dell PowerEdge with 24g of memory.

I am having issues using the LDAP connector on 9.3.1 against an OSX server running yosemite with Server.app 5.04. I have a comodo cert on the OSX server which secures all its public and private services, which are all working as i think they should.

I have followed https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/8875 - and installed the root CA/Cert for the cert that is active on my OSX...

User authentication problem with samba shares

Hello,

I'm new to freenas, and the initial steps haven't been without problems. One problem is with user authentication in samba shares:

Created two identical datasets, two users (and respective groups) and one samba share for each user. The first user can access/mount both shares (can't write to the second user's share, though), but the second user cannot access/mount any shares. Logging in through ssh works for both users. All the settings visible in the webgui appear the same for both...

Hi there,

I'm a new user of FreeNAS, so what I'm asking might be easy to be answered, but I did not find the answer in the Internet yet.

I am running FreeNAS 9.3-STABLE on a small server.
In order to have the same user accounts available everywhere on my home network, I created an Active Directory using the FreeNAS box with the FreeNAS machine being the only domain controller.
Everything seems to work fine. I also can assign permissions for Active Directory users to the datasets, so the...
